Ashfield MP agrees with Prime Minister that is is too early to end lockdown yet

Speaking on Monday, he said: "I know it is tough, I want to get the economy moving as fast as I can.

"But I refuse to throw away the sacrifice of the British people – and risk a second peak."

The Prime Minister is quite right, we have come a long way in a short time in a war to beat this virus.

We cannot afford to slip for one minute or become complacent.

Hospital admissions and infection rates have been decreasing recently which is proof that the social distancing measures put in place are having a dramatic effec.

We will win this battle, but we need to obey the guidelines.

Last week, I joined the China Research Group (CRG) which is made up of a group of Conservative MP’s to try and get a better understanding of China’s place in the world.

The coronavirus crisis has emphasised that it is right to scrutinise our economic and diplomatic relationship with China.

I find it very difficult to believe that out of a population of 1.4 billion people there have only been around 5,000 deaths, especially when we are led to believe the virus originated in China.

The CRG is not an anti-China group.

I would like to think of it as a Pro-British group set up to make sure our best interests always come first on the world stage.

I have contacted every care home in the constituency over the past couple of weeks to see how they are coping.

The answer is incredibly well and I want to pay tribute to each and every one and all their brilliant staff for their efforts during this difficult time.

Something that may have slipped under the radar is the work the fantastic voluntary sector does across Ashfield and Eastwood.

In normal times it does a great job, but it has really stepped during this pandemic to provide support and advice in the form of food parcels, shopping and befriending.

Again, this shines a light on the spirit of the British people and proves that we are at our very best when faced with adversity.
