COUNCIL leaders hope their plans to alter car parking charges will encourage people to stay longer in the town centre.
The proposals, outlined in the budget report on Thursday, include transferrable tickets to allow motorists to use more than one council car park with the same ticket.
And there will also be cheaper stays of two-hours or more at several car parks.
Coun Sutcliffe said: “We want to encourage people to stay longer in the town during the day and in the evening.”
The proposals are:
•Four Seasons and Walkden Street multi-storeys increase from 90p per hour to £1 per hour.
• Clumber Street and Station Road, currently 90p per hour, proposed £1.50 for first two hours then 90p per hour thereafter.
• Handley Arcade, Toothill Lane, Toothill Road, Church Lane, currently 80p per hour, proposed £1.50 for first two hours then 80p per hour thereafter.
• Watermeadows, Garden Road, Victoria Street, currently 70p per hour, proposed £1.50 for first two hours then 70p per hour thereafter.
All other tariffs would stay as at present and it is estimated the plans will generate £214,000 to protect services.
