One incident during latest fire service strike

Firefighters were called to cut free a woman from a car which had collided with a fallen tree in Haywood Oaks Lane, Blidworth.

Only one other 999 call was received by Fire Control during the two hour strike - which took place between 6.30am and 8.30am - and this related to an incident in Derbyshire.

The industrial action was the FBU’s third in 11 days and is part of an on-going dispute with the government over pensions.

FBU members went on strike for five hours on Christmas Eve and six hours on New Year’s Eve.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to incidents with specially-recruited contingency crews and firefighters who are not members of the FBU during these periods.

The Service received eight 999 calls between 7pm and midnight on 24th December, three of which required an operational response.

A total of 14 calls were received on 31st December between 6.30 pm and half past midnight, seven of which required attendance by fire crews.

Chief Fire Officer Frank Swann said: “By putting our contingency plans in place, the Service has been able to provide limited operational cover to meet the demands placed on us during the three periods of industrial action over the festive period.

“However, the situation is not ideal and, as we embark on a new year, I hope that the Fire Brigades Union and the government can reopen their negotiations and bring an end to this long-running dispute.”
