Ollerton Primary School still requires improvements, say Ofsted inspectors

The education watchdog said during a period of high staff turnover leaders, including governors, have not secured consistently good teaching, achievement and behaviour across

the school.

Leaders have not addressed all the areas for improvement raised at the last inspection well enough.

Even though standards in English and mathematics have risen since the last inspection, they are still below average and pupils do not make consistently good progress.

Leaders, including governors, have not ensured that the pupil premium funding is used effectively across the school, so gaps in performance are wide in some year groups, while closing in others.

In some classes, teachers’ marking is not clear enough to bring rapid improvements in pupils’ progress, especially in writing and mathematics.

Pupils do not always get enough practice in producing extended pieces of written English in other subjects.

Head Teacher, Carl Braithwaite, said: “I understands that there is still work to be done but I am pleased that improvement has been recognised in the context of high staff turnover.

“There is a good group of staff in place ready and able to move the school forward in the next phase of its development.”

While further improvements are needed to ensure that all teaching is at least good, the team of inspectors who visited the school said that Early Years Provision was good and that pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is good. Standards had improved in Maths and English since the last inspection; that the school engaged well with most parents.

Pupils have a good appreciation of fundamental British values.
