Ollerton man crashed mum's car and missed his trial

An Ollerton man who had just crashed his mum's car told police officers he was high on cannabis and then refused a blood test because he had a phobia about needles, a court heard.

Nathan Moffat took the vehicle without his mum’s permission and hit a moving car on Forest Road, Ollerton, on February 10, said prosecutor Donna Fawcett.

He admitted aggravated vehicle taking, and driving without a licence of insurance, but denied failing to provide a specimen.

When he failed to turn up for a trial on April 23, he was convicted in his absence, banned for 12 months and given a 12 month community order.

Vicky Clarson, mitigating, said a drug assessment later showed negative, and he passed a drug impairment test, so Moffat was likely to have been found not guilty.

“His circumstances at the time were difficult and he had no fixed address,” she said. “He got mixed up about the trial date.”

Moffat, 21, of Forest House Park Homes, admitted failing to attend court, at Mansfield Magistrates Court, on Friday.

Magistrates extended his driving ban by four months, and ordered him to pay £200 towards the £620 costs of the trial, £20 for the bail act offence and a £30 government surcharge.
