OLLERTON: Butchers bring home the bacon with industry award

A family-run Ollerton butchers have brought in the bacon with a renowned industry award.

S. Allwood and Son Ltd have won bronze at the BPEX Awards for their specialist Mangalitsa sausages.

The butchery, which was opened in 1928, has also been entered into the regional finals of the Great British Sausage Competition.

Its special Mangalitsa sausages is a rare breed of pork bred locally within Ollerton.

Richard Allwood, owner and Ollerton Town Councillor, said: “We are very excited about these latest accolades as this is our first attempt at the BPEX British Sausage Week National Competition.

“We’ve been working with local farmer, Gavin Wagstaff, for the past six months now to help sustainably bring Mangalitsa pigs to our area.

“These are a rare-breed which is the closest descendant to the wild boar that used to roam Sherwood Forest, as a result we’ve created a unique range of Mangalitsa products that aren’t available elsewhere.”

During British Sausage Week, 4th to 10th November, S.Allwood and Son Ltd will be hosting taste-testing every day, showcasing their traditional and new varieties of sausage.

Mr Allwood, added: “We’re on tenterhooks for the regional finals when our Allwoods Original Pork Sausage recipe competes for regional champion.”

The Ollerton butcher will be attending the final judging at the Orange Tree in Nottingham on the 5th November.
