Notts pupils raise awareness on consent with radio ad

In a joint project with Nottinghamshire Police, Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Collaborate Digital school children were asked to make a song about consent and the winning entry from Bracken Hill School, wowed judges and will now appear on local radio.

The project has been focusing on working with special schools, something which Public Protection investigator DCI Pete Quinn was keen to implement. “For so long, these special education environments have been overlooked,” he said.

The project has been supported and funded by Nottinghamshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Paddy Tipping who said: “It’s so important that we help young and vulnerable people to protect themselves, which is why I was keen to fund this project. This type of interactive education is really effective, helping young people to understand the risks they face and to have the confidence to make safe choices when it comes to relationships and protecting their own bodies.

“It’s disappointing, but young people with learning difficulties face an increased risk of abuse. Thankfully, projects like this help to make everyone involved aware of the danger signs and what to do if you suspect something is wrong.”

Sally Rawson, Head of Key Stage 4 at Bracken Hill School said: “Some of the work that we’ve done around consent has acted as a forum, opening up other conversations about what is right and what is wrong.

“This project has been incredibly valuable, probably one of the most valuable things we’ve done all year.”
