Notts diamond couple can finally have their honeymoon

Joyce and Richard Bargh are celebrating their Diamond wedding anniversary

Richard and Joyce Bargh of Edwinstowe were married in 1956.

The couple, who have three daughters and seven grandchildren, said they have had their ups and downs but ‘always got through it together’.

Richard, 79, a retired coal miner originally from Derbyshire met his sweetheart Joyce, 78, when they were in their teens, and would go to the same cinema in Chesterfield on a Sunday night.

The couple were married in 1956, but never had a honeymoon.

He said: “She used to go with her friends and us lads would go and one particular Sunday her friend stopped me on the bus and said, ‘tell Joyce I’m not coming’.

“So when I saw her I said, ‘Eileen said to tell you she’s not coming’. Joyce said, ‘I’m going home then’ and I said ‘no you’re not, you’re coming with me’.”

The couple, who are keen bowls players, have three daughters and seven grandchildren.

Richard claimed the secret to a long marriage was easy: “Just do as you’re told!” he said.

“You have to work at it together don’t you. It’s a long time, we’ve had our ill health but we get through it together. That’s the only way. She’s fantastic, she looks after me, I wouldn’t know what do do without her.”

Joyce, who worked for Robinson’s factory in Chesterfield, said: “We’ve had our ups and down and we’ve got over them.

“I’d be lost without him.

She said the pair had struggled for money when they first wed.“We couldn’t even afford a honeymoon - we didn’t have enough money - so we’re talking about trying to go somewhere for a weekend now,” she said.

Couple to have their third marriage after sixty fun years together

Richard and Joyce are excited to renew their vows at a ceremony marking 60 years together.

Joyce said: “It’s the third time. We were married in Derbyshire, we were married in Nottinghamshire for our 25th and now we’ll be married again.”

The pair have bought new wedding rings and will be married in front of 30 friends and family on March 25.

Richard joked: “I’m sick of making promises.” Daughter Linda Colclough, 57, who lives near Retford said: “They were teenagers when they got married so everything was on a shoe string.

“Nowadays we take things like holidays for granted but they struggled.

“It’s lovely that they still want to go and spend the weekend together, even if its sixty year late and I think it’s lovely they still think of it as a honeymoon.”
