Notts council leader apologises to historic sex abuse victims

The leader of the county council has apologised to victims of historic child abuse in Nottinghamshire.

The follows the sentencing of former council employee Andris Logins, who was jailed for 20 years yeasterday for 17 sexual offences at the Beechwood Care Home in the 1980s.

Councillor Alan Rhodes read his statement of apology at a full council meeting at the County Hall this morning (March 24).

He said: “To the victims and their families, I wholeheartedly and unreservedly apologise when, as a council, we fail in our duty of care to protect you.

“I want to pay tribute to the bravery, courage and persistence of these victims who at last have seen justice prevail with a lengthy custodial sentence for a man who betrayed his position of trust.

“It was our role to keep children safe and we clearly didn’t, which is a deep source of regret.”

He went on to say that the council will co-operate with the police with the Goddard Inquiry and ongoing investigations regarding the historic abuse.

Coun Rhodes added: “Be reassured that as a council we will do everything in our power to help make sure the children in our care are kept safe.”
