Nottinghamshire road users urged to be bright and safe as darkest day approaches

As we pass through the shortest days of the year, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike are being urged to make sure they can be clearly seen.

At the same time, motorists are being advised to check and prepare their vehicles for any journeys they may be making over the festive period – especially if the weather takes a turn for the worst.

Coun Kevin Greaves, chairman of the County Council’s transport and highways committee, said: “The County Council works constantly to help improve safety on Nottinghamshire’s roads but they can still be very hazardous to drive on throughout the winter months.

“Statistics show that there is a peak in casualty rates amongst drivers over the three-month period, November, December and January.

“This can be for all sorts of reasons, but we can all help to improve matters by making sure our vehicles are in peak condition and able to cope.”

Motorists are being urged to use their headlights so that not only can they see other road users but – just as importantly -- they, themselves, can be seen. Drivers are also being advised to check their lights to ensure that they are all working properly.

Drivers are also being urged to keep an eye on their speed and listen to local weather forecasts. Youngsters on foot are being urged to wear fluorescent or bright clothing in the daytime and reflective material at night.
