Nottinghamshire Police cadets receive certificates

The 25 cadets, who have already completed half of their two year training scheme, demonstrated their new found skills at the end of a summer school at the University of Derby.

Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping, who together with the Chief Constable, presented the cadets with their Summer School Certificates of Completion, is already looking forward to them using their new skills and knowledge of crime prevention for the benefit of the county’s communities.

He said: “Our cadet scheme is specially designed for young people who may later want to join the force as a regular officer or Special Constable.

“The cadets’ enthusiasm and commitment to their training is, I believe, a good indication of the scheme’s ultimate value to the people of Nottinghamshire.”

All the cadets – who joined the force last October – volunteer four hours each month to assist the police at public events and deliver crime prevention activities.

The scheme has a wide range of volunteers aged 16-18, providing positive role models for young people and helping to make a difference to local communities.

“As well as giving them a valuable insight into what police work involves, the scheme provides them with opportunities for development in a policing environment,” said the commissioner.

Devised and run by the University’s Department of Law and Criminology and Nottinghamshire’s police force, the week-long Summer School covered elements of scene examination, self-defence, how to reduce the chances of being involved in serious road accidents, and giving evidence in court.

Inspector Simon Pealing, the force’s project manager for the Volunteer Police Cadets, said the cadets also learned about key legislation such as arrests, use of force, and stop and search. Part of the course involved the cadets witnessing an ‘offence’ and putting their new skills into practice before finally delivering their evidence in the mock trial.
