Nottinghamshire: Gun amnesty dubbed ‘encouraging’

A host of firearms were handed in during the amnesty.

The first of its kind in a decade ran from 3rd to 17th March and also saw bullets and other ammunition turned in.

Police are still finalising numbers, but 16 separate ‘records’ have so far been made in Mansfield, although some people are understood to have surrendered more than one item.

At Sutton, there were 10 records, including those for a box of 21 bullets, a hand pistol, and shot guns.

Hucknall, meanwhile, saw eight records, with four rifles, a starter pistol, pellet guns and cartridges among the items.

At least 100 weapons and rounds of ammunition have been handed in across the county’s 15 police stations during the course of the amnesty.

“It has been very encouraging,” DCI Mick Luke of Vanguard, the force’s large-scale, ongoing investigation to target violent offenders.

“We’ve had a lot of feedback from people who have acknowledged that they held the weapons without realising the illegality or simply didn’t know what to do with them.”

“Our job is to ensure that anything harmful, or that could be used for criminal activity, is removed. It is good news these firearms are no longer in our communities.”
