The trailblazer programme is part of the government’s childhood obesity plan which was published in June 2018.

The government aims to halve childhood obesity and reduce the gap in obesity between children from the most and least deprived areas by 2030.

Trailblazer Programme will work closely with local authorities to test the limits of existing powers to tackle childhood obesity, share learning and best practice to encourage wider action, and to consider further actions government can take to enable local action.

Nottinghamshire County Council is one of thirteen councils selected for the twelve-week pilot.

Councils will receive funding and support to develop their plans over this period and in May five councils will then be selected to progress to the three-year programme.

Ben Bradley MP has welcomed the action.

He said: “It’s really positive news that Nottinghamshire will be a pilot area for the discovery phase of the childhood obesity Trailblazer Programme.

"Being selected is a great achievement, especially as there were over 100 applications from across England.

"Whilst childhood obesity is clearly a complex issue and no single action or plan will help us solve the challenge on its own, this announcement is an important step in the right direction. "The Trailblazer Programme aims to find solutions to local barriers to healthier lifestyles, and comes with significant funding to help test what can be achieved within the existing powers that councils have.

"I’m looking forward to seeing some positive results for Mansfield!”
