Nottinghamshire County Council issue warning over strong winds

Nottinghamshire residents are being warned about strong winds expected for late Sunday evening to midnight on Monday by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Emergency Planning team.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning ‘be prepared’ severe weather warning for strong winds for the county during this period.

There is a potential for winds to reach 60 to 80mph which may cause a risk of falling trees as well as damage to buildings and other structure and possible travel disruption.

There is also yellow ‘be aware’ severe weather warning in place for heavy rainfall which may lead to some surface water flooding.

Councillor Glynn Gilfoyle, Chair of the County Council’s Community Safety Committee, said: “This weather is a developing situation so we are advising residents to check the Met Office weather forecast frequently over the weekend, keep up to date with the latest weather warnings and listen to the local radio for travel disruption information.”

The County Council is on stand-by and will be working with the emergency services and other organisations within the county to respond to disruption caused by high winds and flood emergencies and to support local communities.

Residents are being advised to drive with care, especially on exposed routes and to be aware of possible debris being blown around.

Drivers are warned to think before they drive through flood water, not only because of the risk of getting stuck but also because they could inadvertently be causing flooding to nearby properties.

Residents who are concerned about flooding are advised to put flood protection measures in place to help protect their property in preparation for the predicted rainfall.

Households wishing to use sandbags to help protect their property should purchase them in advance from local DIY stores and builders merchants.
