Nominations for Idlewells fund come flooding in

Over 75 nominations have already been received for the first £1,000 from the Idlewells Community Fund scheme - and there is still a week for people to put their causes forward.

Organisers of the scheme, the Idlewells Shopping Centre in Sutton and Ashfield Chad, are delighted at the early response.

“We’re eager to ensure that all local charities, groups or organisations – indeed anyone working hard for their community in Nottinghamshire – hears about our Community Fund,” said centre assistant manager and founder of the scheme, Chloe O’Donnell.

“We’ve got £1,000 to donate to one good cause this month – and will be doing it all again in October.”

A panel will be put together to review the nominations and ensure that the money is given to a genuine and worthy cause.

Recipients could be a locally-based charity, schools that need money for a particular project or any organisation that helps, supports or is run for the benefit of Ashfield people.

To make a nomination, visit www.idlewells.co.uk or email [email protected] with details of the good cause and an explanation of no more than 100 words, about how the funds would help.

Nominations for this first Community Fund will be accepted until Wednesday 16th July.

Here are some of the nominations that have been received so far:

New Cross Community Church, Sutton.

Nominated by Julie Cotteril and Christine Palmer.

“The community church provides many activities for the community – for people from two years to 90+. It provides a safe place to meet and a real community atmosphere. It is struggling for funds to keep all of the activities and clubs going, so would love to receive the donation.”

Blackwell Youth Club.

Nominated by Helen Hill, from Sutton and others.

“I’d like to nominate my daughter’s local youth club Blackwell Youth Club. They work so hard to raise money for events and are hoping to take at least 35 kids to Kingswood Adventure for a few days. It is so hard for families in our area who don’t have a holiday, so the youth club helps and they love it. My daughter has been on one of these events - it builds friendships and confidence. The staff put all the time and money they can into this. I feel they deserve a chance to win.”

FAN (Families against Neuroblastoma).

Nominated by Dawn Cockerill.

“My son was diagnosed with this awful disease at nine-months-old. Thankfully the cancer has been removed.

The charity helps raise money for treatments, or wishes for terminal children or to support families. Also the most important thing is raising awareness as early diagnosis is so vital, as I know first hand.”

Charity Summer Ball 2015

Nominated by Colette Byars.

“This is an annual event that has been set up in memory of James Bulger. In 2015 the funds from this event will be donated to charities nationwide that benefit and support vulnerable people.

The aims and objectives of the James Bulger Memorial Trust Ltd are to benefit and support young people who are disadvantaged by reason of having become the victims of crime, hatred or bullying.

The funds would help this charity to fulfil its aims and objectives by helping to provide cost-free travel and holiday accommodation for such children and their families, as well as a range of other tangible rewards, and to support other organisations benefiting children in similar circumstances.”

A Prop Me Up Theatre Company

Nominated by Kathryn Vardy.

“A Prop Me Up Theatre Company - a not for profit organisation - helps build confidence and skills in youngsters and adults alike. They voluntarily visit residential homes to do selected performances themed throughout the year and are currently doing a musical selection within Ashfield care homes which is being greatly enjoyed by carers and residents.

They work with youngsters of all abilities, some with learning difficulties, and produce some high quality productions for the public’s entertainment and for the youngsters engagement.

They are off into schools and youth clubs throughout the year performing educational/issue based pieces (childhood grief - a subject not commonly approached in schools) which are all original works and self-produced by the company.

The group gives all of its time for free and with £1,000 they would be able to engage with the local Sutton Community Academy pantomime this year and continue their support of the New Cross Community Choir.”
