Have you always admired a local sportsperson from afar, but never had the opportunity to show them how much their efforts are appreciated? Well, here’s your chance to put things right.
The Newark and Sherwood Sports Awards and Review 2011 is taking place on Thursday, 24th November at Kelham Hall. The awards, the sixth to take place, celebrate the achievements of the district’s leading players, teams, volunteers and clubs.
Nominations are now being taken. The nomination process is open to anyone and nominators can be teachers, coaches, volunteers or parents, or someone who plays alongside a potential sporting hero.
There are 12 categories for different junior, senior and club nominations. This includes an additional new category this year of Community Event of the Year, which will be decided by a public vote. A shortlist will be produced following the close of nominations.
Criteria for making a nomination is that the event must have taken place within the year we are looking for - summer 2010 or winter 2010/2011, must have taken place within the district and was predominately for people in the district, and mainly that the event raised the profile of sports and physical activity, and encouraged further participation. Nominations don’t need to meet all of these criteria to be in with a chance.
The council’s cabinet member for leisure and culture, Cllr Roger Jackson, said: “Every year the panel of judges has an incredibly difficult job of picking winners in every category, as all nominations are worthy of some recognition for their hard work.
“The Newark and Sherwood Sports Awards and Review is vital in demonstrating the rich variety of sport across the district, and the many talented sportspeople, coaches and volunteers that we have.
“We’re heading into an Olympic year so it has never been more important to reward, celebrate and encourage the sporting talent on our doorstep.”
