Newstead Abbey to feature on Antiques Roadshow

Sunday teatime staple, Antiques Roadshow, was filmed at Lord Byron’s historical home last June but the episode will finally be aired on Easter Sunday.

One of the items being valued on the show is Byron’s scrap screen, which was made for Byron by his fencing instructor, Henry Angelo, in London probably sometime between 1811 and 1815.

The screen is on loan to Newstead from a private collection and is decorated with portraits of famous boxers and theatre folk of the day.

The programme also takes a look at a pair of boxing gloves that belonged to Byron and were used by him at Newstead and are on permanent display in the Library.

Penny Beniston, commercial manager, said: “We had such a wonderful day, I would like to thank everyone who helped and supported Newstead at the filming and for the past twelve months.

“We don’t seem to have stopped with events and tours, and I am so pleased to announce that the house will be open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons for visitors to wander around.”

A second programme featuring the abbey’s Japanese Garden and Japanese Room is due to air in the autumn.
