Newborn baby abandoned in toilets at Shirebrook warehouse

Police are investigating after a woman gave birth to a baby boy in a Shirebrook warehouse on New Year’s Day before abandoning it.

Staff at the Sports Direct Warehouse, contacted Chad to say that the woman, believed to be of Eastern European origin, gave birth in the toilets at the Brook Park East site.

It is not known who discovered the infant or how the mother was identified but paramedics were called who then contacted police.

The baby boy was taken to King’s Mill Hospital before being transferred to a specialist neo-natal unit in Leicester, police said.

Police told Chad that the mother, a woman in her 20s, had also received hospital treatment.

A Derbyshire police spokesman said: “Police were called by the ambulance service at around 11.15pm on January 1st to reports of the birth of a baby in unusual circumstances at a business premises in Shirebrook.

“The baby was taken to a neo-natal unit where he remains. His condition is serious but stable.

“The mother, a woman in her 20s, was also taken to hospital for treatment.

“Officers are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the birth.”

Nobody from Sports Direct was available to comment at the time of going to press.
