New Sutton skip idea is a '˜massive success'

The new BIG Ashfield Spring Clean campaign which aims to make Ashfield a cleaner place has finished its first day in action Monday, May 21.

Alongside the 12 skips placed across Sutton, two in Stanton Hill and one in Huthwaite, council staff and councillors alike lent a helping hand by litter picking on parks.

Councillor Jason Zadrozny, leader of Ashfield District Council who set up the campaign said: “When we took over leadership of the council a couple of weeks ago the biggest complaints coming to us from residents was the state of the area we know fly-tipping has gone up and it is something we want to remedy so we are taking part rolling our sleeves up to put pride back into our streets.

“Already it is looking like a massive success.”

Coun Zadrozny said the money for the skips was made available as he reduced the number of cabinet members at the council when he took over by one saving £9,000.

The skips will be in place on the following streets in Sutton; Garden Lane, Penn Street, Redcliffe Street, East Street, Leamington Drive, Carsic Lane, Carsic Road, Quarrydale Road, Pepper Street, Woodlands Way, Willowbridge Lane, Sutton Road, until Friday, May 25.

Other streets involved include Woodland Avenue, Huthwaite, and Hazel Street and Fackley Way Stanton Hill.

Robert Mitchell, chief executive of the council who was out picking litter on Monday, May 21 with the council leader said: “The staff are enjoying being out in the community litter picking. We need to evaluate the effectiveness of this and the costs but providing it proves to be successful and it does look as though it will be then we can factor it into the council budget going forward.”

On May 19 council vans travelled across Sutton to pick up waste.

Kirkby and surrounding rural areas will receive a clean up by vans picking up waste on June 2 and static skips are to be placed around for five days starting on May 29.
