The goods on sale at Howlambs Unique Furniture on Watnall Road are described by owner Tracey Howden as ‘unique, cosy, friendly, helpful and stylish’.

Tracey says she has sourced furniture from across the region for her partner, Alan Lambert, a talented carpenter, to restore in his worksop at the back of the store.

Tracey, 42, who moved from Draycott to Hucknall in June last year, said: “I know what he is capable of and the quality of his furniture. I want him to sell his furniture properly. It just needs to be displayed correctly.

“If someone comes into the shop they can have furniture made to their own specifications. If it is made from wood Alan can make it.

“We went around auctions like the Cattlemarket in Nottingham. I have always been interested in interior design and things that I think are nice and that I think will sell.”

The shop features a number of ‘shabby chic’ items, including 1940s school desks with the original chairs, and a variety of wall plaques, mirrors and pictures, as well as furniture made from old reclaimed timber.

At the centre is a big veneer cabinet which Tracey admits isn’t ‘everyone’s cup of tea but it does have the ‘wow’ factor’ and is ‘something that looks good and will look amazing in the right house’.

She said: “It’s not a massive shop. I have tried to create a very homely atmosphere. I have tried to create interest in the corners.

From February the shop will also be stocking soft furnishings from ‘Australia’s answer to Harrods, Raine and Humble’, and ironmongery from JWL based in Basford.

Tracey says customers can commission purpose-built items from Alan and choose the handles, door knobs or hinges they want.
