New skate park is all set for green light

Edwinstowe Parish Council and local campaigners have secured the £100,000 necessary to build the new facility, on the newly-named Jubilee Park in the village.

Recent public consultation revealed that the majority of residents were in favour of the project, despite a range of objections from residents in nearby housing.

Parish council chairman Celia Brooks told the Chad that the project is aimed at providing more facilities for young people aged 12-18.

She said: “We have some wonderful play facilities for younger children in Edwinstowe but we believe that a skate park will provide a valuable sporting facility for older children.

“We have sports clubs in Edwinstowe but not everyone is a team player.”

She added that many parents had praised the scheme, as currently young people have to travel into Mansfield to use skating facilities.

The development will be made from coloured concrete, designed to blend in with the local landscape.

Council maintenance workers are also being trained to carry our necessary repairs, but the parish council estimates that these will be minimal.

Residents had raised a range of objections to the project, including noise nuisance, increased crime and anti-social behaviour, as well as access to the site for emergency vehicles and the potential impact on local housing costs.

But the parish council said it has worked with local authorities in Mansfield and Matlock, which have built skate parks, and research has shown that concerns are unjustified.

Apart from skateboards, the development will also be suitable for scooters, bmx bikes and roller blades.
