New scheme to cut shed thefts

The initiative was launched on Monday to mark the start of the summer months when this type of crime traditionally spirals.

As part of the crime-cracking scheme officers will be giving advice to the public on how to secure their property.

Detective Chief Inspector Julian Wilson, from Derbyshire Police, said: “We would like to remind all residents to secure their sheds and out buildings.

“A way to try and prevent this would be to invest in a padlock or shed alarm and to use reverse hinges with bolts where the fastening mechanism is on the inside.

“Also look at the security lighting surrounding your property and cut back any shrubbery which may be creating a screen for burglars to hide behind. Please ensure that valuable items are not left on display.”
