A HOST of exciting events have been planned to mark the launch of Mansfield’s new library as it officially opens its doors next Tuesday (10th January).
Popular children’s book characters like The Gruffalo and Kipper the Dog will help the £3.4m library begin the year in style.
Although the facility will not be officially open before Nottinghamshire County Council chairman Coun Keith Walker cuts the ribbon on Tuesday, its services are already available to members of the public.
And among the events to look out for in the first month are:
An art showcase of original work by local young people until 29th February.
Saturday from 10am-3pm - Gruffalo Day - free family Saturday.
Tuesday from 10am - Kipper the Dog at Rattle, Rhyme and Roll.
18th January, 2-2.30pm - Bookstart Bear at Story Hullabaloo.
25th January at 2pm - Pit stories.
29th January at 3pm - Hot House Big Band (Jazz Steps Live at the Library).
The library’s new facilities also include a computer area with free wi-fi and internet access, dedicated children’s, local studies and professional gallery areas, a Discovery Room for courses and training and a new theatre space.
A number of community groups and schools have been allowed behind the scenes tours of the West Gate library this month.
The facility is expected to attract up to 300,000 visitors every year and the revamp should increase the number of people using it by up to 30 per cent.
Nottinghamshire’s head of libraries Peter Gaw says the new library is ‘a transformation in the service provided to the people of Mansfield’.
“Our aim has been to create something they can be proud of,” he said on a recent tour of the library.
“It is the largest library in Nottinghamshire and the central one for the county.”
Council chiefs have also thanked library users for their patience during the refurbishment works, and using the temporary premises on Regent Street.
The centre’s new opening hours are: Monday to Friday 8.30am-5.30pm; Saturday 9am-4pm and Sunday 11am-3pm.
Tickets for the Hot House Big Band event are £10/£8 concessions, £5 students and under 16s accompanied by an adult go free. To book contact Mansfield 651 337.
