New housing partnership brings empty homes back into use

A partnership between Bolsover District Council, North East Derbyshire District Council and Groundwork Creswell will see eighteen empty properties bought back into use and offered to people at affordable rent levels.

A grant from the Homes and Communities Agency will fund the scheme that will see the properties bought back up to standard and into use as affordable homes to help local people in housing need.

The councils are in the process of looking for potential properties suitable for the scheme but are still looking for more. If you are a homeowner whose property has been empty for six months and may be struggling to sell or rent your home please get in touch.

Groundwork will undertake the refurbishment work, which will be determined by the condition of the individual properties, but will also involve ensuring they are adequately heated and have modern kitchens and bathrooms facilities.

Once the work has been completed the owner will agree for the property to be let at an affordable rent (80% of the market rent) for a period of at least five years following the work.

Bolsover District Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing Management, Councillor Keith Bowman said, “This is a very exciting scheme and one that we are delighted to be able to support. This will help solve two problems, the first in bringing back into use empty properties and the second being able to offer homes at an affordable level to local people.”

Coun Betty Hill, member with responsibility for Housing for North East Derbyshire District Council, urged people to get in touch if they know of a property which may be suitable for the scheme.  “This is a great initiative that will benefit people - if anyone knows of a property which we could help bring back into use for the good of the community please contact us,” she added.

Groundwork Creswell will be the landlord of the properties, but both Bolsover District Council and North East Derbyshire (Rykneld Homes) will be responsible for the management and repairs of the properties through a Service Level Agreement.
