Staff, parents and pupils at a Hucknall school have welcomed a new headteacher who has just completed his first half-term.

Leen Mills said a fond farewell to their former head John White when he retired in the summer and have now said hello to Russell Tew who has taken the reins at the popular primary.

Mr Tew is no stranger to the town though having served at two of the town’s school in the last 13 years.

He started his stint in the town at Spring Street School as its deputy and acting head before moving on to Annie Holgate as their head.

“I’m delighted to be here at Leen Mills,” said Mr Tew. “I’m looking to build on the good foundations that have been laid in the past and the good practices already in place.

“I want the best for our children and want them to look back on their time here with happy memories.”

The school has grown considerably in recent years and currently has 368 pupils.

“I’ve really enjoyed my first few weeks here,” added Mr Tew. “Leen Mills is a very nurturing school with a good sense of teamwork and community which is reflected in the children and how they care for one another.”

Mr Tew said whilst it is inevitable thatwith a new headteacher there will be changes, he moved to reassure the school community that they wouldn’t be made without good reason.

“I’m here to learn about the school before making any changes and won’t be making changes for changes sake.”

As with all schools, there are major moves in the pipeline with the introduction of a new national curriculum in 2014.

“I’ll be looking at what’s best for the children and the most relevant.

“There is a real buzz here and I am looking forward to seeing children develop over the years and sharing the journey ahead with the children.”
