New block is opened as St Peter’s celebrates 40 years

Pupils past and present came together to celebrate in style the 40th anniversary of St Peter’s Church of England Primary School.

A school has been associated with the Parish Church of St Peter’s, Mansfield for more 400 years in various locations.

But it was in 1974 that it was moved from its town centre location at Churchside to the then new Bellamy Road Estate, opening on 4th June.

A full day of celebrations marked the anniversary, which coincided with the opening of a new teaching block.

The school was able to display memorabilia relating to its past, including photos and souvenirs, following a successful appeal in the Chad and church magazine.

Former governors and teachers were also invited to the event, where all current classes showcasing their work.

“It was really good to see so many people who have been connected to the school since its opening able to attend,” said chairman of governors Christine Bacon.

“It wasn’t just former pupils who were catching up with each other, but teachers as well.”

Entertainment was provided by current pupils by way of dance, drama, choir singing, and a violin session.

Year six pupils welcomed and escorted guests around the school, while afternoon tea was prepared and served.

St Peter’s is one of six primary schools nominated by Nottinghamshire County Council to expand to accommodate 15 additional pupils per year into reception classes.

The new block of four classrooms was funded and overseen by the local county authority and was formally opened by The Right Reverend Bishop Tony Porter from the Southwell Diocese.

He cut the ribbon to open the building accompanied by headteacher, Pearl Day, and Mrs Bacon.

The trio also cut huge celebration cakes – one featuring a picture of the old school and one depicting the new block.

Mrs Bacon added: “I’d like to thank Pearl, her staff and all the parents, pupils and volunteers for all their hard work which helped make this special day a resounding success.”
