Museum wins '˜heritage site of the year'

Mansfield Museum has been named Nottinghamshire's Heritage Site of the Year.

The Mansfield District Council attraction picked up two accolades at the Nottinghamshire Heritage Awards and earlier this year won an award at the Mansfield 2020 Business Awards.

Mansfield Museum won the Best Event award for the Great Made in Mansfield Pub Quiz and was named Heritage Site of the Year from among the entries shortlisted for awards.

The inaugural pub quiz event, in which people were invited to enter teams, was held in the Palace Theatre Bar off the museum’s Made In Mansfield Gallery.

There were ten themed rounds, including a trail round the gallery, another involving mystery artefacts to match to descriptions and 25 archive photographs of Mansfield across the 20th century to identify.

The aim of the evenings was to celebrate the success of the museum’s Made in Mansfield industrial gallery on its birthday and to actively take the work of the museum into the community and reach people who may not usually visit the museum.

Cllr David Smith, portfolio holder for cultural services, town and district centres, said: “We really so proud of the museum’s achievements in these awards which are thoroughly deserved.

“The museum really is an excellent asset for people living in and visiting Mansfield and its excellence is largely down to the great efforts and teamwork of the museum staff and their commitment to making the museum as accessible and as relevant to the community as possible.”

In April, the museum won the Commitment to the Community Award, sponsored by the Evolve, at the Mansfield 2020 Business Awards.
