POLICE have launched a murder investigation in Mansfield after a Forest Town man died on Sunday following a serious assault in Mansfield town centre early on Saturday.

Detectives say that Jonathan Alun Turner (27) was assaulted outside The Social pub - also known as The Vibe - in Stockwell Gate shortly before 4am on Saturday.

He was taken to King’s Mill Hospital with serious head injuries, where he died on Sunday morning.

Police said on Sunday afternoon that his parents were with their son at hospital and have asked for privacy at this time.

A Home Office post-mortem examination is due to be carried out at Leicester later on Sunday.

Police arrested three men in connection with the incident, all aged 22. Two remain in custody and continue to be questioned, the third has been released without charge. Detectives are continuing to examine CCTV covering the area where the assault took place.

They have also renewed their appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident or has any further information to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 0300 300 9999 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A cordon outside the pub on Saturday has now been lifted. On Saturday officers had sealed off a 100-yard stretch of Stockwell Gate from the bus station end. Two stairwell exits from Walkden Street car park were also shut.
