Murder hunt police release man

Officers investigating the murder of Jia Ashton at Somercotes released the man they were questioning on Wednesday afternoon.

The 26-year-old man, who had been in custody since Sunday evening, was released without charge.

Mrs Ashton’s body was found in Sleetmoor Woods at 4.30pm on Sunday after she had been reported missing by her husband during last Friday evening.

Det Supt Terry Branson, leading the murder investigation, said: “I’d like to renew my appeal for local people to come forward to help us with this enquiry.

“The last positive sighting of Mrs Ashton was on Thursday evening, March 10 just after 5pm when she left work at Thorntons.

“The investigation team wants to hear from anyone who was in Sleetmoor Woods, walking on the footpath known as the ‘Yellow Brick Road’ or in the neighbouring areas between 4pm and 7pm on that evening. It is important that they come forward even if they didn’t see anything they think was suspicious.

“All information will be treated in the strictest confidence.”

Anyone who can help the police enquiry should ring the incident room on 0345 123 33 33 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
