Mum’s EMAS anger after third no show

Rebecca Turton told Chad it is the third time that East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) has failed to respond appropriately after her eight-year-old daughter Kirstie suffered an epileptic fit.

The latest incident happened while Kirstie was at school on 16th October.

Rebecca (27) said she was called by school staff at the Mansfield Primary Academy on October 16th to tell her that Kirstie - who suffers from epilepsy - had collapsed.

But when EMAS were contacted and an ambulance was requested, the service refused to attend, she said. Instead a member of school staff had to take the child to hospital in her own car.

“This is the first time this has happened at school and it must have been terrifying for the staff,” Rebecca said.

“I have just had enough of this now - it is the third time this has happened in as many months and I don’t know what else I can do to make EMAS take this seriously other than try and get Sir Alan Meale to take on the case.”

In August, Chad reported how EMAS had apologised after paramedics failed to attend when Kirstie was taken ill on a Mansfield Park.

Last month Rebecca, of Blake Crescent, again contacted Chad after she was told an ambulance could take two hours to arrive after Kirstie collapsed at home.

An EMAS spokesman said: “We have looked into the way we dealt with this call and can confirm it was handled correctly.

“Furthermore, our decision on whether or not to send an ambulance to any given 999 is taken using the same call categorisation principle used by all other UK ambulance services.”

The trust also plans to arrange a meeting between Rebecca and their deputy director of nursing.
