The shocking statistics put HMP Ranby, a category C prison in Retford, at the top of the list with HMP Wandsworth.

Bassetlaw MP John Mann has said that Government and prison authorities failed to act in 2014 when he raised concerns about the problems at the prison.

The figures show that over the last three years there have been 13 deaths, eight of which were suicides, with six deaths last year, four of which were suicides.

Mr Mann said: “In 2014 I met with the Chief Inspector of Prisons, the Governor of Ranby Prison and the Prisons Minister and raised my concerns about what was going on inside the prison.”

“I told them repeatedly from June to December 2014 about the problems with staff morale, prisoners accessing mobile phones and drugs and the behaviour of the senior management regime.”

He added: “In 2014 I alleged experienced prison officers were being forced out in dubious circumstances and provided the evidence to back this up. Why did they fail to act on this issue and allow Ranby to become one of the worst prisons in the UK?”
