MP is ready for a return to Westminster after a great summer in Mansfield

It is now the final week school holidays, and coming towards the end of what has been a beautiful summer in Mansfield, writes Mansfield MP Ben Bradley.

I haven’t seen wall to wall sunshine like that in my lifetime and I hope everyone was able to get out in to the countryside or even to the beach in the market to enjoy it.

My team and I have had a busy few weeks as we completed our marathon stint of more than 100 consecutive days of campaigning, talking to local residents about their hopes and concerns.

It’s been fantastic to meet so many people and see so much support, so thanks to everyone who spoke to us and especially to my great team for their dedication to making Mansfield better.

We also became trained ‘dementia friends’ and first aiders, I spent a day shadowing the nursing staff at Kingsmill Emergency Department, visited the Wildlife Rescue Centre, met and sat on the ‘dragons den’ Panel for young people on National Citizen Service amongst a hundred other things.

It’s genuinely such good fun to be able to get involved across a number of different areas and projects, and to see the depth and variety of good work that goes on across the district.

On a more serious note, I met the police, the BID’s town centre manager and the mayor to talk about the ongoing drug problem in town.

It was heartening to understand that action the police in particular are taking to move people on and to make arrests where possible, to ensure that other visitors to the town centre are kept safe.

There’s no quick answer but I know so many organisations have made this their key priority now, and we will make progress locally whilst I lobby Government on a national level to change laws on drug classification and sentencing.

When Parliament returns next week I’ll continue to shout up for Mansfield as I have throughout my first year as the MP, so make sure you keep in touch.
