MP pleased to see more job opportunities coming to the area

This week I've been working to support local people in to work through my seasonal jobs fair, supported by the Department for Work and Pensions, Futures and local job board Dalmatian, where we offered up more than 100 local opportunities, writes Ben Bradley, MP for Mansfield.

We wanted to offer up the chance not just to find and apply for roles, but to get the experts there to help people with their applications and make sure they have the very best possible chance of getting a new job.

It was fantastic to see so many local people coming through the door to take advantage of day, and can I say a big thank you to the organisations involved and to my team in the office for all of their work putting the event together.

There are always hundreds more local jobs that appear at this time of year, and these seasonal jobs can be brilliant for those looking to earn a bit more at Christmas time, but perhaps more importantly also often lead to permanent roles.

I have my own experience having been a Christmas temp at ALDI before securing a permanent job there.

I hope to be able to report some successes in the coming weeks as people who came along on the day are successful with their applications.

It’s great to see really positive local figures, which show unemployment continues to fall. The number of people on unemployment benefits continues to fall, and particularly welcome is that more young people aged 18-to-24 are in work too.

That means more people in work earning a living, supporting themselves and their families with all of the security that brings, and of course reducing the benefits bill for taxpayers.

I hope to hold similar events in the future, following on from my successful ‘older people’s fair’ (we need a catchier name!) a few months ago where we brought together support and advice services. We’re also looking at ways to support schools and young people in delivering careers advice,

I want to be proactive and support our community as much as I

possibly can, so my office team and I look for every opportunity to make a difference
