More than 200 groups benefit from £163,000 funding

More than 200 local clubs and groups have so far benefited from grants totalling more than £163,000 from Derbyshire County Council’s Community Action Grant fund.

In the fourth funding round just announced a further 50 groups have taken a share of grants totalling £41,284 to help them improve life in their communities.

The funding will support projects including children’s play schemes, music and arts events, activities for older people, keep fit initiatives, projects for young people and community improvement schemes (see full list attached).

The county council introduced the Big Society grants last June with a £250,000 funding pot available for small not-for-profit groups and organisations to support their work to help build strong and flourishing communities. Grants of up to £1,000 will be awarded over seven rounds by the end of this year.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Public Health Coun Carol Hart said: “Our Community Action Grants have been running for a year now and as the scheme progresses it’s been fantastic to see what groups are doing for their local area.

“We know that even a small amount of money can make a real difference to what they want to achieve so we’re delighted to support them with our Big Society grants.

“Groups who’ve successfully applied for funding are already putting their grants to good use and there’s still time for others to apply over three more rounds this year.”

Successful bids will include activities or projects that allow local people to improve life locally. They must also support the council’s key social, economic and environmental priorities. This means grants could, for example, pay for:

* Local events and activities for teenagers

* Street and community improvement grants

* Play equipment

* Care, support or activity groups for older people The first Community Action Grants were awarded last September with 57 groups receiving a share of £41,323. A further £39,936 was awarded to 51 groups in the second phase in December and £41,040 to 48 groups in the third round in March.

The deadline for the fifth round of grants is Friday 27 July.
