The Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) was introduced on Tuesday, March 1 and covers parts of Langwith and Whaley Thorns, and gives both the council and police the ability to enforce bans of alcohol consumption, littering and urinating in public.

The move follows a number of reports in the area over a prolonged period about nuisance behaviour, street drinking and large groups congregating and causing intimidation, noise and anti-social behaviour.

Police officers and council officers can give on the spot fines of up to £100 to anyone found to be breaching the conditions, or even a conviction and fine of up to £1,000 in court.

Langwith falls within the boundaries of both Derbyshire Constabulary and Bolsover District Council, and Nottinghamshire Police and Bassetlaw District Council, but the organisations are working together to make sure the order is as effective as possible.

Sergeant Mark Church, who is in charge of the Safer Neighbourhood policing teams which cover the Shirebrook and Scarcliffe areas, said: “Local residents have told us that they are concerned about anti-social and nuisance behaviour. This order will not only give us additional powers to target the issue, but also send a clear message that the police and local councils are working hard to make sure anti-social behaviour won’t be tolerated.

“We are also currently making use of the powers set out by a PSPO which is already in place in Shirebrook, and officers have issued more than 20 Fixed Penalty Notices since it started three months ago. ”
