Minister visits Boughton and Bilsthorpe housing projects

Kris Hopkins MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Housing & Local Growth, made an official visit to Boughton and Bilsthorpe this week, to view developments where funding has been made available for affordable new homes in the area.

The event was organised to enable the Minister to see first-hand the work Newark and Sherwood Homes and the Newark and Sherwood District Council are undertaking to deliver additional housing.

The Rt Hon Mr Hopkins MP, who was accompanied by member of parliament for Sherwood Mark Spencer MP, first visited a housing scheme managed by Newark and Sherwood Homes on Newark Road in Boughton, which received £2.2m of Homes and Community Agency grant funding in 2011.

Kris Hopkins MP then stopped off at Scarborough Road in Bilsthorpe, where work has recently started on building 25 bungalows to be let at Affordable Rent.

Newark and Sherwood Homes successfully secured funding of almost £500,000 from the Department of Health’s Care and Support Specialised Housing Fund for this development.

The development is being built by Edwinstowe construction firm Robert Woodhead Ltd and is due to be completed by March 2015.

Housing Minister Kris Hopkins said: “I was glad to see for myself the results of years of hard work by Newark and Sherwood Homes to deliver high-quality affordable homes that the local community needs, and to meet Wendy, Magdalena and their families who are benefiting from that.

“We’ve already delivered 170,000 new affordable homes since 2010 and want to go further, so I was particularly pleased to hear that Newark and Sherwood are planning to apply for a share of the £300 million extra borrowing we’re making available.”

Mr Hopkins MP also visited nearby Burton Court Community Centre in Bilsthorpe where he met tenant Ben Hardy, who recently completed the GOALS UK programme run by Newark and Sherwood Homes, which aims to improve self-esteem and employability skills.

He also met representatives of the Newark and Sherwood Federation of Tenants’ and Residents’ Association Tony Straw, Graham Tomlinson and Kate Carter.
