Miners’ welfare set for re-opening

It went into voluntary receivership last month due to decreasing trade in the midst of and mounting utility and supplies bills and inland revenue debts.

Publican Stefan Moverley, of Sandgate House, said the new venue would still be known as Welbeck Miners’ Welfare because it was still part of the community but it would no longer be a club.

He added: “We are not having membership because you have to have a committee - we want this place for the community but we want to do what we want to do with it.

“But it will be a very similar format - with live entertainment at weekends and different activities to get the community involved.

“We want to get the welfare back to what it should be but without all the politics of a committee.”

The new pub will be leased from Welbeck Miners’ Welfare Trust and operate as a free house.

Said Stefan: “We are looking to introduce real ale but want to listen to local people and see what they want.

“We will try and accommodate local people as best we can.”

And the beer will not cost you the earth either - with a pint of Carling going for £2.30.

The new Welbeck Miners’ Welfare opening night kicks off on Saturday at 5pm with a performance from 80s rockers Dr and the Medics and a disco preceded by support group Feel the Force.
