Memory bench dedicated to local volunteer

The residents of Bellamy Road Estate in Mansfield were out in force when a memory bench was unveiled at a recent ceremony.

Dedicated community volunteer Vaughan Thomas died at the age of 77 in June and residents set about raising cash for a suitable memorial to the man who gave them a community garden.

Neighbours and friends of Mr Thomas gathered in the garden at Tuxford Court Community Centre to dedicate a special bench in his memory.

The garden in which the bench now stands is the work of Mr Thomas, who two years ago transformed what was then a patch of neglected scrub into a welcome community asset.

Mansfield District Councillor John Smart led the ceremony.

The bench is the result of contributions from residents and the generous community support to the estate by Tesco, represented by Laura Brocklehurst.

Laura spoke at the dedication service of Mr Thomas’s passionate commitment to Bellamy’s community.

His close volunteering colleague Leah Anderson was presented with a gift from Tesco and a bouquet at the same ceremony as a gesture of thanks.
