Memorial is unveiled for brave Taran

A peace garden created in memory of a Mansfield solider who died after returning to the UK after being taken ill whilst serving in Afghanistan has been officially opened.

Since Lance Corporal Taran Cheeseman died, aged 21, in 2009, his parents, Steven and Tracey Cheeseman have been raising funds to create a permanent memorial to him in his home town and have raised over £11,000 through various events.

Now, with the help of £35,000 from the county council’s Local Improvement Scheme (LIS), the permanent memorial to Lance Corporal Cheeseman in Ladybrook Lane, Mansfield, has been created and was opened officially on 7th June.

The work to create the park was carried out jointly with Mansfield District Council who will be contributing towards its maintenance in the future

A small park area existed on the site in the past, but planting had become over-mature and the site disused.

The Cheeseman family commissioned the central feature of the memorial – a stone obelisk with a commemorative plaque.

County councillor Diana Meale said: “This is a wonderful and fitting tribute to Lance Corporal Cheeseman and indeed it is a place where people can go to pay their respects to all young men and women who have lost their lives in recent conflicts.”
