Memorial to honour much-loved Notts footballer who died in crash

Hazel Fox, also known as 'foxy', was a Private in the British Army from Sutton-in-Ashfield and will be sourly missed by her scores of fans and supporters from the local league.

Manager of the team, Dawn Mason-Meakin said: "Hazel was an exceptional fun loving personality of our team. A tiny person with a huge heart and great sense of humour.

"A talented footballer - a very caring and considerate team player who was always willing to help her team mates and do that bit extra for her fellow players.

"She always gave 100 per cent in whatever she did on and off the football pitch.

"Hazel will be sorely missed by everyone at Teversal Ladies FC - our team will never be the same.

And now Ms Mason-Meakin says the club is to hold a charity memroia; night on Friday, March 4 at ground in respect of Hazel.

She added: "All are welcome to attend and sign the condolence book.

"The money raised will go to the family initially but the club as a whole are going to buy a permanent memorial to be placed at the ground."

The community has rallying around for Hazel's family at this difficult time, and over £3,000 has already been raised in a online appeal.

Local businesses, Oddfellows pub, Buds and Blooms florist in Warsop, Asda and Wilko's are reported to have made donations, and now it emerges that both Nottingham Forest FC and Mansfield Town have offered signed football items to be won at the event.

More than 200 people have so far dug deep to donate to Rebecca Amy-Elizabeth Lee's Gofundme page in the past 24 hours, completely shattering her target of £500.

She wrote: “Although no amount of words can stop the heartache of hazels incredible family and friends, I have created this account hoping that we can all pull together and ease the families financial worries.

“Let’s give hazel the send off she deserves.

“Such a beautiful, young woman taken away far too soon.”

Hazel was previous student of West Notts College, studying plumbing in 2011-12 and carpentry and joinery in 2012-13 before she went on to join the Army.

Her carpentry and joinery tutor, Mark Porter, said: “Hazel was an absolutely fantastic person – so upbeat and bubbly. She was always the first student to smile at you in the morning and start a conversation.

“Hazel was an excellent student and was on course to gain her carpentry and joinery qualification but left before completing it in order to join the Army – that’s what she really wanted to do.

“I was devastated when I heard the news, as were other colleagues. I’m so sad to hear that Hazel has passed away. It’s awful that such a bright, young life has ended so prematurely, and our hearts go out to her loved ones.”
