Mayoral honours handed out

Fundraisers and volunteers have been honoured for their community spirit and rewarded with mayoral commendations in Mansfield .

At a recent district council meeting Forest Town Community Council members Syd Owen, Phyllis Gregory, Jim Gregson and Val Moss were first to be handed the honours.

The community council is responsible for Forest Town’s Christmas lights, raising lots of funds over the years which have enabled 100 elderly residents to have a Christmas party, along with a jubilee celebration and village market at Christmas.

Jess Simpkin has raised £30,781 of her £45,000 target for University of Nottingham for children’s brain tumour research.

Mansfield Mayor, Coun Kate Allsop, explained: “Jess is a very brave young woman who has all of my admiration. I first heard of Jess when local businessman John Adkin contacted me to ask if I could help with a world record they were attempting to break.

“In September last year 539 Triumph motorbikes squeezed onto the Marr Route between Nottingham and Southwell Road to break a new world record and raise money for charity.”

Philp and Pam Bishop were awarded the mayoral honour for their efforts carrying out varied duties at St Mark’s Church over many years.

Pam was responsible for the very successful Big Snore project for Framework.

The final commendation went to Iris Goodman.

Iris has worked as part of the Neighbourhood Watch scheme for the past 18 years and still continues today to be a major part of the group, at the age of 94.

Iris is also well known for supporting local groups and causes.
