Mansfield's new Travelodge hotel will bring much needed investment to the town

Planning permission has been granted for a 63 bedroom hotel a restaurant and a retail unit at the site of the Gala Bingo Club in Mansfield.

The Travelodge hotel would create 21 jobs and the retail and restaurant 31 full time equivalent jobs.

The application was passed by Mansfield District Council planning committee on Monday (July 30).

It is the fourth application to build an hotel in the Mansfield area recently.

There are plans to develop an 80-bedroom hotel on Stockwell Gate North along with a proposed 108-bedroom hotel at Mansfield Town FC’s One Call stadium and a potential hotel on a proposed leisure and retail development on land off Belevedere Street.

District councillor Brian Lohan said he welcomed the hotel as an investment in the town. He added: “It will bring employment and jobs and people from outside the area looking at bringing business to the area will be able to come and stay. It will encourage investment in the town centre. I was disappointed that Gala Bingo has gone because a lot of people used it.”

The application site is the existing Gala Bingo Club which fronts onto Albert Street, and lies between St Peters Way to the south east and Midworth Street to the northwest. The site comprises the existing Gala Bingo building, and a car parking area to the rear, within which there is a small detached brick building.

The proposed hotel building will be positioned on the southern part of the site, and would join onto the adjacent property 43 Albert Street and extend round the corner facing onto St Peters Way as well.

It will be four storeys high with bedrooms located on the upper three floors.

The hotel entrance and ancillary facilities will be located on the ground floor, where there would also be A1 retail and A3 restaurant uses. The A1 / A3 uses would be operated independently form the hotel.

Plans lodged with the council say the hotel would be a contemporary design with a flat roof, and faced largely in brick, with cladding to part of the upper floors on the south east and northwest facing elevations.
