Mansfield woman tells how she raised the alarm after she found an elderly neighbour in his blazing house

A 70-year-old man has been taken to hospital after house blaze in George Street, Mansfield, suffering burns and smoke inhalation.

The man, named locally as Malcolm Gregg was found by a neighbour at around 10am after fire swept through his living room.

Sandra Parkin told Chad: “I was first in there - it was horrible.

“I looked across the street and I saw his nets were black so I knew there had been a fire.

“I ran across and opened the door and the smoke hit me.

“I was shouting and screaming on the street because I couldn’t get to him.

She said another neighbour came to get him out.

“ He looked badly burned, I hope he is going to be OK

“I have looked after him for five yers, he is like a dad to me.

“My partner always goes to see him every morning to make him a cup of tea.”

Police and fire service officers were at the scene investigating the cause of the incident this afternoon.

Firefighters from Mansfield, Ashfield and Edwinstowe helped tackle the blaze.
