MANSFIELD has been named on the relay route of the Olympic Torch ahead of the London 2012 games.
The flame will pass through the town on Thursday 28th June next year and dozens of youngsters will have the opportunity to get involved.
The route was revealed today (Monday) and the torch will also be visiting Edwinstowe, Boughton, Kirton, Glapwell and Bolsover.
Mansfield mayor Tony Egginton said: “To be part of such a prestigious event is an honour and a once in a lifetime opportunity.
“The Torch Relay will shine a light on Mansfield, giving communities in and around the area the opportunity to demonstrate to the rest of the UK, and the world, the many things we have to offer.
“Mansfield is no stranger to the Olympic spotlight and we have produced our own world class athletes.
“Thanks to Rebecca Adlington and Sam Hynd’s stunning achievements in Beijing, 2008 will go down as the most successful year ever for Mansfield sport. Bringing the Olympic Torch to Mansfield will continue to build on this success.
“We will be holding a number of community events in the run-up to the Torch Relay, which will give people, and in particular young people, the opportunity to get involved in Olympic sports and share in the Olympic spirit.
“We want to inspire Mansfield and the surrounding communities to get involved and celebrate this historical occasion.”
