Daniel Amatt, 25, of Botany Avenue, Mansfield, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Ruth Snodin, prosecuting, said Amatt approached the woman on Leeming Street, in Mansfield, at around 4am on May 1.

She told the court Amatt had shouted abuse at the woman and her friend and threw chips at her before punching her in the face.

In a statement, the woman said: “Because of the incident I have lost one of my front teeth, and received bruising on my face, painful teeth and bruising on my elbow.”

She said she suffered dizziness and sickness after the unprovoked attack and had lost confidence at work.

Sarah Neale, mitigating, said: “He has extremely limited recollection of what happened.”

She said Amatt received Employment Support Allowance because he suffered from anxiety and depression, and was concerned about going to prison.

A probation report said that he could not control his drinking and his friends described him as ‘a bad drinker’.

The court heard he received a 20-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, for the assault and battery of his then-partner in November 2015.

Amatt also denied the aggravated vehicle taking of a Vauxhall Astra from a caravan park in Ingoldmells, in Lincolnshire, on March 4. This charge was dismissed by the Crown Prosecution Service.

But Amatt did admit to driving the car without insurance, while over the limit, on the same date.

A breath test revealed he had 89 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

He was disqualified for four years, starting from the likely date of his release, and was fined £120.

He was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison for the assault, and 16 weeks, concurrent, for the breach of the suspended sentence.

District Judge Andrew Davison said: “It was a serious and unprovoked attack on a young female which caused her significant pain and damage.”

Amatt was ordered to pay £1,000 compensation to his victim, which will be taken at £10 a week from his benefits.
