Mansfield surveyor wins £10,000 to adapt his house after he suffered from a stroke

Building merchants Jewson awarded Steve the prize as part of the trade hero category of its building better communities competition.

Steve was left paralysed down the left-hand side of his body following a stroke in March and, having undergone surgery to remove part of his skull, is now learning to live with his life altering injuries.

The winnings will be put towards completing a range of alterations around Steve’s house, such as widening doors, installing a wet room complete with hoist, and adding a specialist bed, to assist him in his everyday life.

Steve’s partner, Sam Edge said: “This is an absolutely huge build and there’s so much work to do. Steven is now home but we need to get started on the foundations for his new bedroom and wet room, and we’re still really in need of funds. The materials from Jewson will make a huge difference to us and will allow us to get started on this phase of the project. We have a long road ahead of us, but this will help us get on our way. Thank you to everyone who has supported us.”

Jewson Managing Director, Thierry Dufour, added: “Steve and his family have been through so much recently and we’re very happy to play our part in aiding in his recovery.

The Jewson Trade Hero category celebrates those in the construction industry who work behind the scenes to make their neighbourhoods better places to live. At the awards event on 3rd July, David joined four other Trade Heroes and 32 community projects who were presented with a share of a £250,000 prize fund by renowned architect and TV personality, George Clarke.
