Mansfield student braves the shave for Macmillan

Jessica Peters, 18, is a health and social care student at West Notts college, and courageously had her head shaved as part of the charity’s annual ‘brave the shave’ event.

She decided to brave the shave after she saw family and friends affected by cancer.

The shave took place at the Cavendish social club on Cavendish Street, Mansfield on May 6, and Jessica aims to raise £1000.

Jessica said she felt inspired to brave the shave as she wanted to spread a positive message that hair does not define who you are.

She said: “I honestly believe that Macmillan do an amazing job working beside families who are confused or just feeling down, they always listen and that’s what’s important. I want to spread the message to everyone who may have cancer and tell them hair doesn’t define the person we are and we should embrace it, not hide it!”

She added: “For anyone who knows me will know I love getting involved in charity work especially when I feel like I am making a difference, I have chosen to fund raise for macmillan by shaving my hair off for cancer, this is not only to get money for this charity to support families and people who have the disease, but also to show awareness to everyone out there, that hair doesn’t define us as people we can change, cut it do anything with it but we will still be the same inspiring person, so my goal is to show everyone fighting cancer that they are not alone. Some days they may feel like they can not carry on, but I am here to remind them they are pure and beautiful and amazing people! My great mama and nana passed away from cancer and many more of my family members, so I feel like I am not only doing it for everyone out there but them too, to help people like they did and be the person they would want me to become by standing up and fighting together!”

Macmillian supports people living with cancer in Nottinghamshire, by providing information and support.

The money raised will help Macmillian provide support to the 28,000 living with the disease in Nottinghamshire.
