Mansfield Specsavers lends Guide Dogs a helping paw

AN OPTICIANS in Mansfield is set to embark on a charity mission in support of Guide Dogs Week.

The team at Specsavers, located on West Gate, is gearing up to help meet Guide Dogs’ nationwide fundraising target of £250,000, by inviting a guide dog puppy into the store on Thursday 11th October.

Imogen Hoyle, store director at Specsavers in Mansfield, said: “Guide Dogs provide a lifeline to people who are blind or partially sighted so we want to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by the visually impaired on a daily basis, raising much needed funds for the charity in the process.

The Specsavers team will be hosting a variety of fundraising activities throughout the week, including a raffle, a ‘Guess the Guide Dog’ game and also offering face painting to customers, all in an attempt to raise the vital funds for the worthy cause.

Specsavers’ long-term commitment to Guide Dogs has seen stores nationwide raise more than £170,000 to date by undertaking activities including eye test donations, in-store fundraising, sponsored parachute jumps and marathons.

Jayne George, Guide Dogs’ Director of Fundraising and Income Generation, said “Blind and partially sighted people overcome extraordinary challenges every day to live independently and do the things that the rest of us take for granted. For Guide Dogs Week 2012, we’re asking people to step into their world. Whether people come along to our events and try walking in blindfold, or organise their own challenge, we’re sure it will open their eyes.”

Earlier this year Specsavers’ founder, Dame Mary Perkins, visited the charity’s National Breeding Centre near Leamington Spa to see first-hand how the money raised so far has been invested, which includes funding of 25 new guide dog puppies.
