Mansfield: Royal Ballet project for quintet of schools

Mansfield school pupils aged between seven and eight will put their best foot forward in an innovative dance education project with The Royal Ballet School.

A total of 188 schoolchildren will attend the primarySTEPS programme when it begins its fourth year in area with a series of demonstrations at The Manor Academy on Thursday.

Year three pupils from St Edmunds CE, Northfield, Peafield Lane, Robin Hood and Leas Park Junior Schools will have a rare opportunity to see first-hand the athleticism and artistry of ballet students.

They will also have the opportunity to experience the positions and movements of ballet for themselves by having a go on stage.

Teachers and musicians from The Royal Ballet School’s Dance Partnership and Access Programme will run the sessions along with final-year Royal Ballet School students and younger students from the School’s nationwide Junior Associate Scheme.

The programme has been developed in the Mansfield area in partnership with the Manor Academy and East Midlands-based Dance 4.

After the launch evening, pupils from the five schools will spend the subsequent six weeks discovering ballet through a carefully-designed series of creative dance workshops.

At the end of the course, 25 of the most talented pupils will be invited to further their new-found knowledge and skills by joining free weekly primarySTEPS classes, hosted by The Manor Academy, for up to four years.

After that, the aspiring young dancers will be advised on how best to continue their dance training and some may be invited to audition for The Royal Ballet School’s highly regarded Junior Associate programme.
