Mansfield Rotarians set off on 200 mile charity walk
Denise Starkey, Mansfield Rotary club president and Cate Hunt, former president, have set off today on a coast - to coast walk to Scarborough.
The walk, due to finish at the Rotary District Conference at Scarborough Spa on October 4 started today at St. Bees in Cumbria.
Both Denise and Cate are personally covering all the associated expenses for the walk so that every penny of sponsorship raised will go to supporting the local community and are hoping to raise a minimum of £1000.
Mansfield Rotary Club raises money to support the local community and charities with Santa's Sleigh at Christmas.
Denise said: "We have been training for this walk since January, to ensure we cross the finish line in Scarborough on October 4 for the start of Rotary District 1220 Conference on October 5."
"As president of Mansfield Rotary Club in our 90th year I wanted to take on a challenge that would stretch me like never before, whilst raising funds for the Mansfield Local Community and Charities which Rotary support, so I am walking the Coast to Coast!"
"This is a challenge for me, as not long ago I didn't even walk to the corner shop.
"But now I've taken to the hills and dales, putting in the miles get myself in the best possible shape to achieve over 200 miles of walking in three National Parks.
"I could not do this alone, so I asked Rotarian Cate Hunt to join me.
"Cate is a very experienced walker and I couldn't ask for a better "walking buddy".
"We are both looking forward to the challenge that awaits us as Cate has never walked the coast to coast before and both of us cant wait to get started, but more importantly raise vital funds for our Local Community."
Denise and Cate have adopted Nancy Sinatra's 'These boots were made for walking' as the theme for their walk..
Cate, who is retired, has completed a fair number of long distance walks but for Denise, who is a business owner in Newark, this is her very first walk of significant mileage and to boost the challenge even further Cate and Denise have a combined age of 125 years.
